For what it's worth ...

... and for whoever's interested (besides me), I'll post something about Tuesday's essays before the weekend's out.

Sounds good to me.
Do you feel a weight lifted from your shoulders?
I know I do.

Yes. Definitely. Even if I can't completely relax, I am relieved.

I looked all over Ontario Convention Center for the Grand Poobah. I was going to ask the proctor to give a shout out to ya.

This could be a bit of wishful thinking but from your rehash, it sounds like you are a lot more confident about your performance this go 'round than you have been in the past. Compare how you are feeling after this test--do you feel better about this one than you have in the past?

Poobah,

I know you have a career but c'mon bro.... Are you going to post day 1 or not? Or is it somewhere and I'm missing it?

Confident? I don't know. I'm not sure if I can take anymore punishment. Any time I feel the tiniest spark of hope flare up I feel a hard slap across my face. Then I look down and realize it was my hand that was doing the slappin'.

Seriously, though, I feel good about my MBEs, and I feel like the substantive change I made to the way I approached the essays and the PTs made some sort of difference. Good/bad? We shall see.

But on this particular exam I feel like I improved my performance on the essays and on the first PT. I sucked out loud on the second PT.

Yeah, I kinda' got sidetracked on Sunday. My granddaughter came up and told me she's going to Disneyland and asked me if I wanted to come with her.

And that's why I didn't get to the recap on Sunday. Monday, I had to get some work done.

So, I have time now. All I have to do is remember ...

Granddaughters and Disneyland are waaaay more important than recapping the exam on a blog. Good for you PB!!! Hope you had fun.

I thought I would come on here and very sincerely, ask for help, from anyone that may be able to extend themselves to me with a referral if anything...I too am waiting for the November 20 results, of my third attempt, at the CA bar exam...I am in desperate need of a job right now however...

I would be happy to send my complete resume to anyone that may be able to help me...please leave me your e-mail address on here...

Thank you in advance and good luck to all, come November 20...

To anon 1:26 PM.

I passed the bar in Feb and let me tell you, not only is unemployment in CA around 10%, the legal market is going through a restructuring of sorts. Firms are laying off, consolidating, sending transactional work overseas.

My point is, everyone is desperate. Go get yourself a paying job at home depot or wherever so you can pay your bills, then start volunteering at some pro-bono places or get an internship to get experience. At the meantime, still keep applying for jobs.

Most firms are not hiring right now and offering non-paid positions even to people that just passed the bar.

I decided to go solo not by choice but by situation.

Good luck.

how did you get enough experience to start a solo practice?
how is it going?

No experience. Just used practice guides and I also have a couple mentors. So, if I feel the case is too difficult from the get go, I will refer the case, and be co-counsel, to learn.

Money wise, well, I had to get a second non-legal job to help pay the bills.

I don't suggest people do this but if you can't get a legal job, what are you going to do? Just keep working in a non-legal field job? That's a waste of your education.

you bring up really good points about working dead end jobs and about the overall state of the legal job market. to those who might not know, it's really tough to be an inexperienced lawyer right now. i've personally been searching for over a year now and no one will touch me until i get experience. but how do you get experience when no one is willing to train you because they can hire someone who has experience for the same paltry pay minus the effort of training someone new?

i thought having the patent and the california bar on my resume would be an asset, not a liability--since i'm underqualified for most patent (or frankly any attorney) positions and overqualified/misqualified for other business positions.
this is something i didn't foresee being such a problem. passing the bar is a great accomplishment, but lately i've been seriously wondering if it was worth the effort.

I'm surprised you can't find anything even though you passed the patent and regular bar. But that just goes to show how crappy the economy is.

That said, since I did go solo straight off the bat, I'm willing to share some of the pitfalls to avoid, tips, etc. if anyone is interested.

let me know.

I'm interested.

I too have personally felt the frustrations of finally finishing law school, getting through the bar (3 times for me), and then finding out the job market is bleak at best. So I share the sentiment of going solo by choice.....which also happens to be a great book to read for any new attorneys thinking about opening up their own shingle. The book is called "Solo by Choice," and the author is Carolyn Elefant.

Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with the book publisher or author. Its just a great read for new attorneys. Lots of useful practical tips on how to protect your practice, which areas to choose, marketing, etc.

Good luck to all the solos out there!
